Similipal National Park, with its vast forest landscapes, cascading waterfalls, and remarkable biodiversity—including the rare melanistic tiger—is one of India’s most unique ecological regions. It is also home to indigenous communities whose lives are deeply connected to the forests and hills, reflecting a long-standing harmony with nature.

At the MGM Foundation, we are building on this rich ecological and cultural setting to create meaningful, community-driven engagement. Our focus is on strengthening conservation awareness, preserving traditional knowledge systems, and enabling sustainable livelihoods.

Conceptualised and led by MGM Foundation, the Similipal Initiative is a long-term, community-centric programme developed in collaboration with the Similipal Tiger Conservation Foundation (STCF). Through this initiative, we are shaping a platform where art, culture, and conservation come together—rooted firmly in the identity of the region.

What We Are Doing

  • Promoting Indigenous Art
We are revitalising traditional art forms such as Bhit Patow (Santali wall painting), reimagining them as contemporary expressions that also carry messages of conservation.
  • Preserving Language & Identity
Through the Lighthouse Project, we are encouraging the preservation of indigenous scripts like Ol Chiki and Warang Citi, actively engaging youth in safeguarding their cultural heritage.
  • Enabling Sustainable Livelihoods
By strengthening local art and craft ecosystems like working on Bhit Patow on a miniature form on Paper, we are creating opportunities for communities to build sustainable income while retaining authenticity.
  • Fostering Dialogue & Awareness
Through The Similipal Talks, we are connecting communities with students, researchers, and institutions—creating a platform for dialogue around ecology, culture, and conservation.

Through an integrated approach that brings together art, culture, and conservation, The Similipal Initiative by MGM Foundation endeavours to create a meaningful and enduring socio-cultural impact while fostering a deeper connection between communities and their natural environment.
